Spectacular Joining
Acts 4:32-37

All the believers were one in heart and mind.

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, there is no longer any room for earthly division.

Before anything else, your first allegiance is to the multi-national, multi-cultural, worldwide body of Jesus Christ. That is where your first loyalty is.

All through Acts there are Christians who own property. But there is an expectation in the church that you will use it how God wants.

\"Money here will be used to destroy what money is normally used to create: distance and boundaries between people. … Jesus will join us and will use whatever we have to make the joining possible. Too often in our reading of this story our view is clouded by the spectacular giving, and we miss the spectacular joining.”

“The Christian ought to regard all the things that are given him for his use, not as his to hold as his own or to lay up.”

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

Jesus says that the problem isn’t earning and spending money, but in laying up money.

“Watch out! Be on guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

Use what you need. Everything over and above is not yours to control.

None of my brothers and sisters should have a need if I can do anything about it.

When I give, my role is giver, not administrator.

My reward is not tied to whether or not my gift is used correctly. My reward is determined by whether or not I give.

Ananias and Sapphira plot together to lie about the land sale. But they are judged separately.

From now on a Christian’s first loyalty is to their church family, not their immediate family.

\n
\"Our obsession with coupling has served as a way to avoid the Christian work of forming intimate community, and it has drained the church of the deep riches of an intimate life born at a table where the body and blood of Jesus calls us to continually partake. … The church should be the intimate reality of a disciple’s life.”

\nThe Struggle Is Real
Acts 5:1-14 - August 30, 2026\n

We don’t take this passage seriously for two reasons:

We don’t understand it.
We know God won’t back it up.

Verse 3 - “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?”

Acts 2:3-4 - They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:38 doesn’t say you must be baptized to receive forgiveness and the Holy Spirit.

It says you must repent and be baptized to receive forgiveness and the Holy Spirit.

Receiving forgiveness and the Holy Spirit is not a one-step process. It is a two-step process. And baptism is secondary to repentance.

Repentance is deciding to live a different way than you were.

\n30% of Americans regularly attend church.
\n63% of Americans consider themselves to be baptized believers of Jesus.

People want to be identified with Jesus but aren’t going to change their life for him.

Ananias and Sapphira wanted the reputation of Barnabas without the sacrifice of Barnabas.

Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit?”

Lying to the Holy Spirit is spiritual image management.

Mark 10:17-22

The rich young man heard the cost of discipleship and said, “I’m not going to pay that, so I won’t be a disciple.”

That’s honorable.

Ananias and Sapphira heard the cost of discipleship and said “I will be a disciple and still do what I want.”

That’s lying to the Holy Spirit.

Shown Once True Forever:

\nRushing wind - God will lead people to those who have the Spirit
\nTongues of fire - When we have the Holy Spirit it is literally the presence of God resting on our lives.
\nAnanias and Sapphira dropped dead - The punishment for lying to the Holy Spirit is always the death penalty.

One of the ways that Jesus leads our church is by knowing hearts so that we don’t have to.

This isn’t about perfection.

Struggling against sin is a sign of discipleship.

\n
“I won't bow to idols I'll stand strong and worship You, And if it puts me in the fire, I'll rejoice 'cause You're there too, I won’t be formed by feelings, I hold fast to what is true, if the cross brings transformation then I’ll be crucified with you.”
\n

Disciples sing those words with the intention of struggling in it.

But if you sing those words knowing you are going to go home and live the way you always have, you are lying to the Holy Spirit.

The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.

There was a group of people in Jerusalem who were attracted to the church who hadn’t been before.

All the fakers stayed away, but all those craving authenticity finally had a place to turn.

\nActs 5:17-42
Sunday, September 6, 2026\n

What is the church? A group of people overlooking minor differences to live in peace, belief, and to accomplish God’s will. Ekklēsia.

If we are a Restoration Movement church based on the first century church, what does that mean for Indian Hills TODAY and what does that have to do with chapter 5? What does that mean for you and I?

\n
\"Luke may use it (Ekklesia) here because the status of any people is at least partially defined by boundary lines. In this case, those who refuse to be truthful are not part of the group.\" - Schreiner
\n

Acts 5:11 - “Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.” This is the first use of the term Ekklēsia in the book of Acts.

• These boundary lines are making it distinctly clear who the church is!

• Church Unification!

Acts 5:12-16

What does unity mean to you? As a couple, as parents, as a church? Remember boundary lines.

What we are seeing is that people that are in are all in.
People that are on the fence are weeded out quickly.

\n
“Acts tells of problems that spring up alongside the successes. As the church becomes popular, sorcerers and magicians drop in, drawn by the reports of healings and other wonders. Wealthy people, like Ananias and Sapphira, see the church as a place to attract applause for their benevolence. Such opportunists learn that the apostles, not to mention God, will not tolerate corruption in the fledgling church.” - NIV Student Bible
\n

\n
“for the time being at least, only true believers and not compromising ones will join the movement.” - Craig Keener
\n

\n
“The great fear that came upon them was a reverent and respectful fear sourced in the reality that God was clearly active in this community. His hand was upon them both with salvation power and protecting judgement. God will protect His people and cut off those who do not follow his commands. His temple will be pure.” - Schreiner

Acts 5:17-42

Notice what the early church is becoming in Acts 5:17-42.

\nDisruptiveActs 5:17-24
\nGrowing
Acts 5:25-40.
• Its growing in funding. Acts 4:36-37
• It’s growing in number. Acts 5:14
• Its growing in belief.
\nAttitude
Acts 5:41-42.

They were sore, tired, beat down, exhausted. We’re human, we know they were those things. Thats not mentioned. What is mentioned is healing in verse 16, repentance and forgiveness of sins in 31, rejoicing in 41, teaching and proclaiming in 42.

\nJohn Chapter 1, Luke Chapter 5\n

How did these regular, flawed people do all these things?

“Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.” - Luke 5:9

When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. - Acts 4:13

Micah 6:3-8

“My people, what have I done to you? How have I burdened you? Answer me. I brought you up out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery. I sent Moses to lead you, also Aaron and Miriam. My people, remember what Balak king of Moab plotted and what Balaam son of Beor answered. Remember your journey from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the righteous acts of the Lord.” With what shall I come before the Lord and bow down before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of olive oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Micah 6:8 -

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.

And what does the Lord require of you?

To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

\n\"Come Boldly\" - Psalm 25
October 18, 2026\n

The power of the Psalms is that you get to see what a correct relationship with God look like.

How do non-perfect people walk with a perfect God?

In Psalm 25, David has two issues -

He’s being attacked by his enemies.

So he knows he needs to go to God.

\n
There’s been some recent sin in his life.

It can be hard to pray when

You wish your moment of need lined up with your best behavior.

Verse 6 - Tender Mercies

It’s the kind of compassion a mother would feel toward her unborn child.

See me as …

completely helpless.

beloved and precious.

full of potential.

Verse 7

I’m on a path.

See me as the guy on the right side of the path, even though I look more like the guy on the other side.

Why does David do this?

Because it makes him more comfortable coming to God in his sin.

Verse 11

For your name’s sake, O Lord, Pardon my iniquity, for it is great.

This is the best reason to get forgiveness.

The magnitude of our sin is not an obstacle to God’s mercy. It’s why we need God’s mercy. If our sin were a manageable size, we could take care of it ourselves. But it is completely unmanageable.

Don’t minimize your sin.

\"Well, I didn’t really mean to.\"

\"Well, everybody struggles with this.\"

\"Well, at least I didn’t do what she did.”

Verse 15

David says, “No matter my condition, no matter what I did, no matter how much baggage I have, I never hesitate to go to God.”

Any reasoning in your mind of why you shouldn’t take your problems to God is reasoning given to you by Satan.

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

We have to stop thinking about prayer and Bible study as a privilege and start thinking about it as a utility.

Verses 18-19

Look at my misery and my trouble,

And forgive all my sins.

Look at my enemies, for they are many

“Judge me after taking everything into consideration.”

Matthew 7:1-2

So how do we judge others?
